"Janez" is an ongoing project (2017 - ) about dementia and memories, where I follow my stepfather throughout his daily life, fighting this disease. Janez, a former physicist has been diagnosed with dementia a couple of years ago and soon after, one could see a shift in his behaviour and routines. For now, he remains in home care and is taken care of mostly by his wife. I began photographing him on a semi-regular basis in 2018. Documenting his daily life has become my way of coping with harsh effects dementia has on an individual, relatives and relationships between them. There are joyful moments where we both think he has defeated dementia, but those moments quickly disappear.
According to the World Health Organization, there are 50 million people worldwide with dementia right now and the number is projected to reach 82 million in 2030.
